Job Description
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:
This position is responsible for the enforcement of
specific codes standards, such as the New York State Uniform Fire Prevention and Building Code
as well as any other related laws and ordinances. The work is performed under the direction of
the Building Inspector and the Assistant Building Inspector.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:
• Prepares required forms, notices and correspondence relating to the enforcement of the
New York State Uniform Fire Prevention and Building Code, as well as other related laws and
ordinances;
• Prepares reports and utilizes code enforcement related software as required
• Inspects completed building and buildings under construction in order to ascertain
compliance with all state and local codes;
• Inspects existing building and structures, as well as places of assembly and determines their
general condition and safety for continued use;
• Investigates violations and complaints related to the New York State Uniform Fire Prevention
and Building Code, as well as other related laws and ordinances;
• Reports, documents, and process violations of the above referenced laws and ordinances,
and works with other departments on matters of mutual interest;
• Review plans and specifications submitted in connection with building construction and
repair and issues building permits;
• Assists other assigned personnel in the inspection of major structures as directed;
• Provides notification of violations of the above referenced to those who are legally
responsible for them;
• Creates documents including but not limited to construction permits, certificates of
occupancy, temporary certificates of occupancy, certificate of use, public assembly, stop work
order, rental certificate, and landlord registration. This work will be performed in the office or
by mobile field office in the supplied motor vehicle.
• Entering data into the required computer systems used by code enforcement. This work is to
be performed in a timely, organized manner; documenting daily interaction with the public
regarding inspections, complaints and violations;
• Taking and returning phone calls;
• Attending and passing state mandated training and all in service training;
• Familiar with all policies and procedures manual and to adhere to all policies and procedures
set forth;
• Performs a variety of related duties as required
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES, AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:
Good knowledge of modern tools, materials, procedures, and terminology used in building
construction and repair; good knowledge of local building and zoning laws and the New York
State Uniform Fire Prevention and Building Code, as well as Multiple Residence Law, and the
Code of the City of Schenectady as it related to the Buildings Department; ability to read and
interpret building plans, sketches and blueprints; ability to meet and cooperate with the public;
administrative ability; ability to supervise the work of others; ability to keep records and make
reports.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and one (1)
year of experience in building construction or code enforcement and zoning activities, which
shall have involved the review and interpretation of plans, sketches, and blueprints.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS (AT TIME OF APPOINTMENT)
Must possess a valid New York State Driver\'s License and maintain such license throughout
duration of employment.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS (WITHIN TWELVE (12) MONTHS OF TIME OF APPOINTMENT)
Possession of a Code Enforcement Official certificate issued by the State of New York and must
maintain such certification throughout the duration of employment.
